Film Language and Production Assignment 3

In groups of 4, shoot and edit a scene consisting of not more than 10
(production) shots (ie, set-ups) in which one character (‘A’) enters a location
and gives an object to a second character (‘B’). The scene must begin and
end with character A in a separate space from character B. The scene is to be
shot in continuity style.
Bring your shot to class in an electronic format, but make sure in advance that
it will play from a laptop.

Our plan was having the man (A) going to Hendon Central Rail station, he's reading a newspaper and finishes it. Following his way, sitting on the bench of the rail station, is another man(B), waiting for the train. Man A walks to the same bench and sits, putting the newspaper next to him. B looks at the newspaper, and asks (A) if he could read it. Man (B) agrees with it and gives it to him before his train arrives and we see Man B leaving the frame by train.
All of this we had to do it in 10 shots!! (hard one)
See the result for yourselves ;)

"Communicating in Film: Styles and Movements" Sound

A film, nowadays, is nothing without sound, trough sound we can figure out if this is a happy scene, a chase scene, and pretty much every other scene you can think of. We can give it a dramatic, romantic, party mood if we choose it carefully.

Sound was the first revolution of film, being the second revolution of film the digital era.

The first company to produce a film with sound was Warner's' Brothers with "Jazz Singer"(1927).

While in the film himself, there are some different kinds of sound.

For example we can have diagetic and non-diagetic sound, diagetic sound is sound within the world of the film, as a radio working, someone screaming, and non diagetic sound that is sound not presently in the world of the film, therefor the sound that we introduce,  for example the soundtrack.

The first film UK made with sound was "Blackmail" (1929) by the great master of film making Alfred Hitchcock.

Film language and production- interview basics of basics

Things to consider in an interview.

Body Language of the interviewer

  • Well this

Is different from this

In the first we can see someone that’s not really sure of something, it’s boring, and sure give us the idea that what he’s listening is not interesting (in this moment during a interview you lost the audience)

The second picture shows us a confident women, the first thing we may think when we see her, is that she’s going to tell us something important, maybe something even interesting.

And sure EVERYTHING is different from this!

But this is a different kinds of interview!

 The interviewer should

Sit up straight, and lean slightly forward in his chair.

Show enthusiasm by keeping an interested expression. Nod and make positive gestures (the nodding scene)

Establish a comfortable amount of personal space between him and the interviewer. Should avoid invading personal space (because it could make the interviewer feel uncomfortable and take the focus away from the conversation).

The interviewer should create a first time strong connection with the audience. He can do that with a simple stare at the camera.

This will tell the audience that they are reliable and will be talking something serious, this simple gesture of looking directly into the camera can make the news pivot the most believable people on television

The background is important; it has to be interesting, but not too much, because it can’t draw the attention from the interview and, if possible something with we can establish with the interview, you are not going to make a pink background with unicorns if you are interviewing the Uk heavyweight champion of boxing. But a poster of him holding the title, or a ring its OK.

Make the background one with the interview!!

There are a lot of important technical details you have to look out for, hot image(to much white, brightness ), boom shadows,  sound, lights, framing(the image cannot be to tight, it as to have space between the head and the ceiling.)

Camera Movements

Film language and production- first impressions

In our first class of Film production we came across with some difficult answers to give!

Why is which and every one of us in this course!

“Be famous…”, “I love cinema…”, “I want to be a producer…”, “express myself…”, “And just want to be famous and rich!”(I think the last can suit us all =D)

Well this was my answer!

"Have you ever heard of Portuguese cinema? Well I’m here because I want to change it!
I really love to read, and nowadays, we know that people don't really read books, so I want to make people see what I see while I'm reading, and the way I can make it happen is trough films!
I want to learn as much as I can!
Direct films as much as I can!
And, after a few years, I want to go back to Portugal. I want to teach the next generation of portuguese film makers! I really want to put Portugal on the map by it’s cinema"

Then we had the “wake up call” from Eddie, I think it was the first time that some people face the reality, It’s impossible for everyone in our course to make it to director, producer, etc…

Producer Vs Director

Director

  • It’s responsible for overseeing the creative aspects of the film
  • Decide how the film should look, as to pick up a script and turn it into shots, and finally a film
  • Decides when characters should come in
  • Where the light is pointed
  • The frame rate, time of shot, etc...
  • As to think about the audience
  • Their reaction
  • Who is the target audience

Producer

  • ·        It’s the one responsible for making sure everything in set goes according to plan
  • ·        It has to make sure that staff is in the work place at time
  • ·        It’s responsible for the crew:
                        Example:

      • 20 cameramen
      • 10 light technicians
      • 2/3 editors, plus editor assistants
      • Performers
      • 10 make-up artists
      • 10 cloth designers
      • 6 produce assistants
      • Runners
      • Catering team
      • Cleaning team

  •   Security team
  • It has to make sure that everyone is paid in the end of the day, so it’s responsible for making the bank id check, the contracts, for the contract it needs lawyers.

Huge kiss to my cousin who I'm sure she will be the first one to read this tread!
