Storytelling for the Screen Assignment 2
Look at an incident in your own life or in the life of
someone that you know and apply the basic shape of
The Hero's Journey to it. Write this down in no more
than 1 page.

So I’m going to tell you a little about my own story.
Why I’m here and this little episode in my life that’s going to be my “scene” and I’m going to adapt it like in the shape of the Hero with a thousand faces!
So I got my “Call to adventure” when I was accepted in Middlesex, I didn’t really had the “refusal of the call”, but I had some “supernatural aid”, I was so desperate to find a good university, that I ended up goggling “boy wants to go study cinema to UK” and I just like stumbled in a blog of a PORTUGUESE girl that was studying cinema in here, she helped me a lot, so I can consider her as to be my “supernatural aid”.
My “Crossing of the First Threshold” was definitely in the airport, where I have said good-bye to the people that where always there for me for 19 years my grandparents, aunt and uncle, my parents, and as much important, my cousins, people that I share almost everything every day, as ate least 1 was with me and I was still on my mother's belly, she’s awesome, another one has been with me since kinder garden, and it’s more than a friend, and then my youngest cousin, well he is pretty much like the cousin I’ve spent my youth with, they are like the best cousin/friends family you could ever ask for, and then of course my girlfriend, she was the hardest to say goodbye! She’s great! Perfect!
This was my “The Crossing of the First Threshold” as when I passed through those gates in the airport it was everything unknown to me! I didn’t had the bases that I had for 19 years.

The moment I arrived to London was my “Belly of the Whale” everything was unknown, and some still are, but I found a world so much more different from where I came from, I can say that the similarities can be counted from two or three pars of hands.
Right know I’m dealing with my “The Road of Trials”, as pretty much since I have arrived I have only beaten into walls, my first trial was with the house, back in Portugal I was talking to some girls and they had a room going free in Finchley, they said that I would have the room, and the night I arrived to London and to the house, I was told that they needed to do me an interview, and that they would could me in the next day, so I have spent my first night in London in a station. In the morning, they didn’t call me, so I decide to call them, the answer I got from them, was that they already had someone for 1 week to move in to the room. So I’ve stayed in the hostel until now.
Agora em português(now in portuguese)
A aposta?
A pastelaria.
Storytelling for the Screen

a character based on The Serpent in Genesis 3. Their
character can be a devil, a human being, a villain or a
kind of hero. Write this down in no more than 1 page.

John was an honest man, humble in his traits.
He inherited his father's family business a pastry on the corner of the town square, the "The sweet pastry".
When the pastry stopped in his hand, everything was going the wrong way, the dough was of poor quality, and the cakes had more than 3 days, and were displayed in the shop windows before being given to a beggar who was passing by.
Life was not easy, in fact the crisis began to knock on the door and John was thinking of selling the old pastry because it gave him more harm than profit, until one day while in the shop a beautiful woman appear and with a blink she stole his heart. Sophie was her name, she was a beautiful blonde coming from the rich part of town, she saw the bakery on the corner of the square of the "poor area" and decided to enter to see how it looks like. She, too, at the first glance fell for John.
Together they rebuilt the pastry, and renewed basically all there was to renew John, was now the owner of one of the most beautiful pastries in the city, for him, even in the world, certainly his father, if alive, would be proud.
The years passed and John and Sophie built their family, they had two children, Jessica of 7, and Arthur of 5, both completely healthy, intelligent, everything a father could ask for. John's life was just perfect, the perfect woman, two perfect children the perfect job, what could be missing? Nothing!
Until…
One day the most perfect and warm woman walked in to the front door of the shop, was a long red hair with, the must perfect and silkier lips than you can imagine, had firm and large breasts and, her waist it was perfect with her red dress that had a split, that left her leg fully on display, those long slender legs and they would put any man who looked completely crazy for them. She was known as Lady Luck.
Apparently she was the owner of a new casino that had appeared recently in the city. She was there to invite him, has all the owners of large well-known restaurants and bars in town for a game. But it was no ordinary game, the winner takes it all. The bet? The pastry. Obviously John just said no, but those sea-blue eyes, ohhh, they had such and angelic look and especially that fancy cleavage made him change his mind.
So this was how John lost all.
So this was how John lost all.
John, he had it all, family, home, food on the table, love. Now? ....
JOHN HAS NOTHING NOW!
JOHN HAS NOTHING NOW!

Screening (Modern Times)
So this week we have looked at "Modern Times" by Charles Chaplin!
We begin by introducing this "silent film", because it wasn't really silent, in 1936(this is the date that the film was release in the US) there were already sound in the cinema! And has we see in this film, there's a scene where while in a bar, Chaplin sing.
A few aspects to consider:
Right on the first scene we begin to see a flock of sheep, and after it, we see a "flock" of people.
During the film Chaplin makes fun of standardization, while doing his job, tightening screws, he his pretty much like a robot, when he takes a break to go to the toilet for example, he goes all the way doing the same gestures as if he was still tightening screws, and of course Chaplin takes it to an extreme level, using all the possible jokes about it just emphasises that while in that time, "men were a machine they knew how to do one task in the job and one task only, that was for what they were "programmed" for!
As it is a silent film, Chaplin really exaggerates his movements, as comedy silent films are a lot about physical comedy, the walking, the talking, his actions, they are not done like that by mistake, or something like it, it was made like it so we (the audience) could understand everything even without listening the lines!
Has we know this was filmed right after the 1929 Wall street crash, it was a big crises, and we see in the film a lot or poor people, as the Gamin, the girl from the film, Paulette Goddard, who steal bananas so she and her family could eat.
But we can also see a lot of the fun they had in that time, those were time of change in mentality! More even noticed in emancipation of women, going out to clubs and all of those things.
In the scene in the bar right before Chaplin sings, we have two worlds, the poor world where Chaplim and Gamin use to belong and now, at the same time, a world where they only have fun. And as now-a-days, both those worlds coexist, ones with hungry and other just having fun and spending money!
We can consider Chaplin to be simply a comedy genius, as he takes serious aspects and troubles and makes fun of them, he mocks social status, and still when those social classes saw the film, they still laugh, without knowing that they are the one being laugh about!
